Kdrama Review: The Tale of Nokdu

A delightful dance between humor and depth. ‘The Tale of Nokdu’ takes you on a journey that is both whimsical and thought-provoking.

The Tale of Nokdu is a historical drama that follows a man called Nok Du who disguises himself as a woman in a “widow-only village” after assassins raid his home. There, he meets Dong Ju who is a kisaeng in training. This is a suspenseful revenge story but has great humor throughout making it enjoyable to watch.

This is one of those dramas that I wish I could watch for the first time again. The concept of “women-only” communities touched my soul in a way I wasn’t expecting. That element alone makes me rewatch it every once in a while even though it is a small portion of the storyline. I enjoyed watching the women come together and form a society that is based on protection and growth.

I have to spill a little tea though, and don’t come for me: I wasn’t a huge fan of how many episodes there were. Clocking in at 32 episodes, this drama, despite its 30-minute episodes, dragged on a little for me. However, some people truly enjoyed having more episodes at a shorter run time so to each their own!

I loved the main lead’s playful chemistry and I just love everything that Kim So Hyun is in. She dominates the screen every time and Jang Dong Yoon shines in this drama. It is almost unfair how good he looks in hanbok.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable watch and surprisingly made me reflective. I thought a lot about womanhood during this series and what it means to protect the ones we love. Despite how long it is, I would definitely recommend giving this one a watch.
