The Matchmakers: Exploring Love and Life After Tragedy
A historical drama with a twist on the classic “fate” trope.
What if your “fate” doesn’t end in a “happily ever after?” Can you find love after tragedy strikes? Rowoon and Cho Yi Hyun explore these questions in this cozy historical drama. The Matchmakers tells the story of two young people in the Joseon Dynasty who have both lost their spouses and are forced to work together to help others find love.
I will forever be charmed by Rowoon’s performances. His facial expressions tell stories that words and dialogue cannot. He puts so many little details into his performance and character and as a viewer, it is so entertaining to watch.
Cho Yi Hyun is my new roman empire. She is in my head all day every day. Her approach to this character was brilliant – soft in her interactions and yet firm and determined in her beliefs. She displayed the complex emotions this character must be feeling perfectly.
I don’t even know where to begin with the cinematography. One of my favourite elements added to this drama is the moments of quiet reflection. The scenes where the characters walk together in silence are showcased in such a way that you can almost hear what they are thinking and how they are processing their feelings and emotions. That, paired with the stunning settings the filmmakers chose and the shots that were taken, made for an overwhelmingly cozy viewing experience.
The charm of this drama lies in the details. The micro facial expressions, the beauty of the cinematography, the unique, funny, and endearing commentary we are graced with at the beginning of each episode, I loved it all.

I loved The Matchmakers! I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it, from the opening dialogues – they were hilarious! – and the humour, to the tragedies and sadness, all of which were used to illustrate love.
I especially liked that this drama’s theme was about recognizing who you love, and choices we make to follow what is true for us. Certainly Cho Yi Hyun’s parents-in-law were hideous monstrous people, who showed what love is up against. The love stories are all sweet and delightful. I just really loved this show and hope more people come to find it.
You are right about both the lead actors – Rowoon was hilarious at times, and revealed so much through his facial movements. He is growing as an actor. Cho Yi Hyun’s character was delightful and smart. I plan to follow what she does in the future too.
